Abstract
In order to establish the most effective toothbrushing method, five women in their twenties who maintain a healthy oral condition brushed their teeth using a rolling tooth brushing method, scrub tooth brushing method, and tooth brushing using a sonic vibration electric toothbrush. Samples were taken from the tooth surface to compare the changes in Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus casei, general oral microorganisms, and dental plaque. Results were as follows. 1. S. mutans and L. casei on the tooth surface were most abundant following employment of the scrub tooth brushing method; lowest after using the rolling tooth brushing method; and low after brushing with a sonic vibration electric toothbrush. Therefore, the most effective tooth brushing method for the removal of S. mutans and L. casei was confirmed as the roll method. 2. As a result of comparing the changes of oral microorganisms on the surface of the teeth, the tooth brushing method which can be said to most effectively remove general oral microorganisms is the rolling tooth brushing method. Use of a sonic vibration electric toothbrush also had a large effect on removing general oral microorganisms. 3. Using the O¡¯Leary index, the most effective tooth brushing method in reducing dental plaque is the rolling tooth brushing method. The scrub tooth brushing method was found to be less effective in removing dental plaque than the rolling tooth brushing method and tooth brushing method using a sonic vibration electric toothbrush.
